Marathon’s Storied History

Marathon was home to a pulp and paper mill last co-owned by Tembec and Kruger Inc. The mill eventually succumbed to the downturn in worldwide paper demand, and was demolished in 2017. Today, it is a fully remediated brownfield site zoned for industrial and commercial use.

Currently, the Town of Marathon owns the 100+ acre property, making it available to suitable purchasers in whole or in land parcels. The property is located two minutes from Marathon’s downtown core.

The Town’s goal is to find a long-term partner or partners who are looking for a competitive economic alternative to major shipping and/or industrial centres. Marathon’s central location in North America and the world, its access to labour and an established supply chain, and its access to a world-class fibre basket make it the ideal location for a low-cost regional, national, or global operation.
